The project is an office space for Standard Chartered Bank employees located on the ground, 5th, and 6th floors of an office building in Nairobi, Kenya. It comprises almost 9787 sq.m. of modern, functional and safe work space for a team consisting of up to 600 people. The space includes modern office spaces, meeting rooms, a cafeteria, and a terrace.
The diverse range of initiatives introduced by Standard Chartered Kenya to date, have enabled us to minimise the amount of produced waste, significantly increase our recycling rate, and drive and enhance the ESG awareness amongst our employees, as well as incorporate the zero-waste & no single use plastic practices into collaboration with our existing vendors and suppliers.
Key initiatives that led to this accomplishment include:
• Reducing plastic packaging with suppliers
• Encouraging reusable water bottles and mugs
• Refurbishing and donating office furniture
• Implementing a glass bottle return system
• Tracking carbon reduction through waste management
• Adopting sustainable procurement practices
• Providing waste management training to staff and contractors
• Improving waste bin signage
• Conducting waste composition analysis
• Organizing e-waste collection for employees
• Using 100% recycled content paper towels
• Creating a closed-loop composting system for organic waste
• Performing due diligence checks on waste contractors
By setting this precedent, we're paving the way for other organizations in Africa and beyond to pursue ambitious sustainability goals. We're proving that with dedication, creativity, and teamwork, it's possible to transform waste management practices and make a significant positive impact on our environment.
“TRUE certification has introduced a culture of personal accountability in waste management leading to renewed interest on how each one of us can make little but important contribution every day as our participation in creating a greener planet," explained Charles Mbuvi, Head of Security Kenya/Africa & Acting Head of Corporate Real Estate Services. "Intentional practices on waste segregation/re-use are creating great opportunities for staff to positively contribute in sustainable waste practices. I am indeed delighted to be part of a great team."
"Reflecting back to when we started our TRUE certification process for SCB Kenya, the journey has been both challenging and satisfying at the same time. Through stakeholder education, engagement, and involvement we have been able to get buy-in and ownership leading to adoption of sustainable waste management practices in SCB Kenya. Achieving TRUE Platinum certification is a true reflection of our commitment to continually drive sustainable change in waste management including adopting waste reduction, recycling and re-use practices that demonstrate our commitment to diverting waste from landfill.”
