J.M. Smucker Co.'s Lexington manufacturing facility has implemented new changes with plastic film as a result of the latest waste audit. The project involves removal of plastic film with cardboard cores from landfill. Employees adopted the practice and made suggestions on how to Recycle/Re-Use. Some uses included landscaping and green house materials. Some materials were donated to Habitat for Humanity.
The new practice designates waste locations to recover material and split into other recyclable outlets. The efforts have successfully diverted more than 8 tons of waste from landfill and saved the company $3,000 a year.
Another successful practice for the site is the participation in the community Main Street Clean Sweep. The annual street clean-up is organized by Bluegrass Greensource and Jif has been able to participate 2 years in a row. Company employees meet other business’ volunteers and take part in cleaning streets and local parks.
